Disclaimers:
This song is my first completed project using Logic Pro 9 on the Mac. I
created it primarily to learn the software. I hate reading manuals, so I dove
in and began recording, and learned how to mix and arrange as I went. So
it’s hardly worthy of a professional release, but I learned a great deal
while putting it together. So enjoy it (or not) for what it is.
I chose this song as my first project for two reasons: 1) it was a golden
moldy oldie that I knew well enough to perform the multiple parts; and 2) it
was a song I felt I could perform with the few instruments I currently own. As
time goes on, I will purchase additional instruments which will open up new
possibilities for new songs.
There are a few things I’m not happy with about the final product.
The final mix is muddier than I had hoped – I wanted a cleaner bass line,
for example. I’m especially not happy with the vocals, and it’s
clear I have much to learn about using microphones in a living room setting
(and my actual performance could have benefitted from a few more takes) –
I ended up fooling around with the gain and filter settings to get a more edgy
sound from the voice take, and double tracked much of it with a vocoder to add
more depth.
I can continue to tweak this to death, but after two months of hearing the
same song in my headphones over and over again, it’s time to move on, and
use what I learned for the next project. I share this for you just for grins. I
hope you like it – or at least tolerate it. The next one will sound
better, I promise. : )
